Acne (sigh) is something we all deal with but Cystic Acne is a "special" type that can cause pain and prove to be more difficult to treat. For many adults, acne can make a comeback or even persist through your adult years. Whether the cause is hormones, diet or the result of years using overly drying products, we just need it gone.
Thankfully, the lines between clean beauty and dermatology are becoming thinner as brands invest more into science backed formulas. This has created a surge of clean skincare and beauty companies looking to not just rely on their clean ingredient list to sell product but also their proven results.
What causes acne?
There are a variety of factors that can lead to an outbreak of cystic acne. Hormones, stress, and an outdated skincare routing can all be to blame.
Hormonal breakouts frequently appear on the chin and can become more apparent at the end of your pill pack. After days of having a consistent and regulated hormone dosage, coming off of that can spur a cystic acne breakout.
Stress is a known aggravator for many ailments and acne is no exception. If can disrupt your hormones, and heighten cortisol levels which contribute to overall acne breakouts.
Outdated skincare routines that have dried your skin and disrupted the natural balance is another frequent cause. For so many years the prescribed solution to all kinds of acne, including cystic, was to strip your skin of all oils. This causes your skin to overcompensate and produce even more oil, creating a cyclical pattern of over drying and an over production of sebum. In addition to stripping the skin of it's natural ability to regulate itself, many conventional skincare products also contain parabens and synthetic ingredients. Not only can these ingredients irritate your skin, they also disrupt hormones which we have already determined to be a major cause of cystic acne.
Beyond Conventional Treatment
As you may know, from presumably trying dozens of products that don't seem to work, treatments made for surface acne won't have much of an impact on cystic acne. Conventionally dermatologist may recommend treatments that range from blue LED light therapy to cortisone shots but be ready to part with a ton of money.
Apple cider vinegar, green tea, ice, tee tree oil are often touted as natural solutions to acne but we don't know about you, but we haven't been able to find much luck with them. To be honest, we're kind of sick of trading function for ingredients we can actually pronounce.
The root of many effective solutions include reducing inflammation, balance PH levels and reduce bacteria from deeply penetrating the skin. Here are some of our favorite products to help with this.
Oil Cleansers: Oils are great at breaking down other oils without stripping the skin and disrupting PH levels. These cleansers can be beneficial at removing makeup, dirt and excess oil without causing your skin to go into "over production" mode. One of our favorites is Province Apothecarys Moisturizing Cleanser + Make Up Remover which is powered by plant oils won’t clog pores, dry out skin or cause irritation
Oil Serums: Sooth your skin with some additional plant based power. Look for a serum that provides some hydration in addition to protecting your skin from all that nature throws at it. Try out the Clear Skin Advanced Face Serum by Province Apothecary.
Targeting Spot Treatments: Spot treatments are highly concentrated formulas capable of treating blemishes that have already appeared. Unlike conventional treatments that focus on drying or removing oil, look for natural treatments that moisturizes, brightens and has anti inflammatory properties. We're currently loving this Clear Skin Advanced Spot Treatment that contains Turmeric Root Oil and Calendula Flowers
